As a country with the largest Muslim population, Indonesia has significant potential to become a global hub for the halal industry. However, the competitiveness of the national halal industry still lags behind that of other countries, such as Malaysia and the UAE. One of the keys to the development of this industry lies in the synergy between strategic leadership and innovation capacity in halal companies. This research aims to examine the relationship between strategic leadership style and the company's innovative ability to drive the development of the halal industry in Indonesia, as well as identify best practices and challenges faced in building a sustainable innovation ecosystem. This study employs a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design, examining five halal companies across the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics sectors. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis, and then analyzed with thematic techniques. The results of the study show that companies with collaborative and visionary-participatory leadership styles tend to have higher innovation capacity and faster market growth. Factors such as external collaboration, the presence of innovation units, and strategically oriented leaders have been shown to have a significant impact on the performance of the halal industry. The findings of this study have practical implications for policymakers and industry leaders, suggesting the creation of supportive regulatory frameworks to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global halal market.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Leadership Insights and Innovation Journal http://leadinsightsjournal.com/index.php/leadinsightsjournal/article/view/8 Public Sector Leadership Reform: Lessons from Bureaucratic Innovation in Indonesia 2025-08-03T12:07:14+00:00 Upit Elya Rohimi [email protected]
Public sector leadership reform is a crucial aspect in increasing the effectiveness of bureaucratic innovation in Indonesia. Amid the demands for adaptive, transparent, and participatory public services, the role of leadership is key in driving the transformation of government organizations. However, there are still limited studies that explore successful practices of innovative leadership in the context of Indonesia's local bureaucracy. This research aims to analyze public leadership reform strategies that contribute to the success of bureaucratic innovation and formulate policy lessons that can be replicated in various regions. This study uses a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and document analysis at three study locations: Semarang City, Banyuwangi Regency, and Makassar City. The data analysis technique employs a thematic approach, utilizing open coding and source triangulation. The results show that transformational leadership styles, as well as participatory and technocratic efficiency, have a significant impact on the success of bureaucratic innovation. Strategies such as multi-stakeholder engagement, innovation team formation, and public technology integration are the main driving factors. Challenges such as organizational cultural resistance and low capacity of civil servants have also been identified as obstacles to sustainable leadership reform.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Leadership Insights and Innovation Journal http://leadinsightsjournal.com/index.php/leadinsightsjournal/article/view/6 Digital Leadership and Ethical Challenges in the Age of AI Integration 2025-08-03T10:30:39+00:00 Maulina Nabila [email protected] Dayuni Dayuni [email protected]
Digital transformation, driven by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), has significantly altered leadership dynamics across various sectors. However, behind its potential efficiencies, various ethical challenges arise, such as algorithmic bias, privacy violations, and the transparency of automated decisions. This research aims to explore how digital leaders respond to these challenges and to develop a conceptual model of AI-based ethical leadership. The research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, involving in-depth interviews with 12 organizational leaders in the technology, education, and digital governance sectors. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques, which resulted in five main themes: ethical awareness, AI ethics policy, the influence of leadership styles, stakeholder engagement, and implementation challenges. The results show that despite a high awareness of the importance of AI ethics, only a small percentage of organizations have formal ethics policies in place. Leaders with a transformational style tend to be more responsive to ethical issues than those with a transactional style. The study concludes that an ethical leadership framework, which combines technology literacy, value awareness, and collaborative governance, is crucial for navigating the AI era. These findings make a theoretical and practical contribution to building a new direction for ethical digital governance.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Leadership Insights and Innovation Journal http://leadinsightsjournal.com/index.php/leadinsightsjournal/article/view/9 Adaptive Leadership Strategies in Navigating Post-Pandemic Organizational Transformation 2025-08-03T12:10:28+00:00 Fatih Humam Ramadhan [email protected] Maulina Nabila [email protected] Dayuni Dayuni [email protected]
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly reshaped organizational structures, prompting a shift from traditional hierarchical leadership models toward adaptive approaches capable of addressing unprecedented complexity, uncertainty, and digital disruption. These challenges demand leadership that prioritizes flexibility, emotional intelligence, and the capacity to navigate rapid change effectively. This study aims to examine adaptive leadership strategies applied during post-pandemic organizational transformation, particularly in sectors experiencing accelerated digitalization and workforce restructuring. Employing a qualitative multi-case study design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with 15 organizational leaders from education, healthcare, and technology sectors in Indonesia, complemented by document analysis and observational field notes. Thematic analysis revealed three predominant adaptive strategies: fostering psychological safety and inclusive communication, employing agile decision-making to meet evolving stakeholder needs, and cultivating a culture of continuous learning and innovation. These strategies proved instrumental in ensuring operational continuity and strengthening long-term organizational resilience. The findings underscore the need for leadership development models to integrate adaptability as a core competency, providing practical insights for policymakers, organizational leaders, and training institutions in shaping leadership practices that are responsive to the dynamic demands of the post-pandemic era.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Leadership Insights and Innovation Journal http://leadinsightsjournal.com/index.php/leadinsightsjournal/article/view/7 The Role of Innovation Leadership in Boosting MSMEs Competitiveness in Southeast Asia 2025-08-03T11:21:43+00:00 Indi Millatul Maula [email protected]
MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) are the backbone of the economy in the Southeast Asian region, but still face challenges in maintaining competitiveness amid digital disruption and globalization. Innovative leadership is recognized as one of the key factors in driving the strategic transformation of MSMEs towards an adaptive and sustainable business model. This study aims to explore how innovative leadership practices are implemented by MSME actors in five ASEAN countries, and to identify the factors that support and hinder their efforts to increase competitiveness. The approach used was qualitatively exploratory, with data collection through in-depth interviews with 25 MSME actors from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The data analysis technique employed a thematic analysis approach, as outlined by Braun & Clarke. The results indicate that local cultural contexts have a significant influence on innovative leadership practices, access to digital technologies, and collaborative capacity with stakeholders. In addition, barriers such as limited resources, organizational cultural conservatism, and access to training are also significant challenges. The study concludes that successful innovative leadership synergizes local value-based strategies with digital adoption and cross-sectoral strategic partnerships. These findings make an essential contribution to the development of policy frameworks and innovative leadership training for MSMEs in Southeast Asia.
2025-08-18T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2025 Leadership Insights and Innovation Journal
